More Details

A low-cost, light-weight, fuel-efficient engine from Steve Prentice Design.

The Challenge
Steve Prentice Design Limited is a UK-based automotive consulting firm specializing in power train concept design. Their newest challenge was to design a low-cost, light-weight, fuel-efficient engine capable of 100 bhp @ 6500 rpm. The team thought 2D or wireframe CAD would hinder their creative process, so they decided to look for a robust parametric solid modeling package that guaranteed ease-of-use.

The Solution
We considered Pro/ENGINEER, but SolidWorks software impressed us with its well-featured and robust solid modeler. SolidWorks allows us to build concepts quickly, almost as though sketching with solid metal. We generate solids from under defined sketches, create parts within assemblies, and edit designs into different configurations. In 18 months, we have completed more concept projects than ever before, taking them to a greater level of definition in less time than customers believed possible. SolidWorks also provides package dimensions, masses, and major stresses in days, instead of months. We use a variety of add-on solutions, including Working Model and COSMOSWorks for first-pass stress analysis, and PhotoWorks for rendering images for proposals and presentations.

Summary and Metrics:

  • Reduced design time
  • Accurately predicted real world behavior of the model

"In 18 months, we have completed more concept projects than ever before, taking them to a greater level of definition in less time than customers believed possible."
