The Challenge
USSC Group, located in West Conshohocken, Pennsylvania, designs, engineers,
and manufactures "operator and cab-oriented" products. In
addition to driver's seats, its product line includes window sashes,
solar screens, armrest controls, and specialty accessories. The company's
vision is to become a world-class provider of products to the transportation
industry through a consistently superior understanding of customers'
needs and consistently superior product quality.
USSC Group Inc. is revamping its work
processes to decrease the cycle time for its products. The company recently
shifted from 2D drawing to solid modeling as a way of shrinking the
interval between the receipt of an order to the production of drawings
and a bill of materials.
The Solution
The shift to solid modeling is a vital transition to USSC Group's re-engineering
strategy for several reasons, according to Ilya Zhivkovich, quality
and engineering manager at the company. First, it is faster to model
a component as a solid object, as opposed to creating a component as
a 2D line drawing. Second, it is easier to combine 400 to 500 individual
seat components into an assembly with a solid modeler. Third, having
a solid model of the entire assembly lessens the need for prototypes.
Solid Edge and COSMOSDesignSTAR was an ideal choice in making this transition
to solid modeling and analysis.
The availability of a low-cost, Windows-based
solid modeler and analysis package has really improved how USSC Group
does business. USSC is now able to provide quality products in a shorter
amount of time.
Summary and Metrics:
- Reduced design time
- Accurately predicted real world behavior of the model

"Rather
than conceptualizing a seat in our minds and then making a prototype,
solid modeling lets us design and evaluate it on the computer."

Quality and Engineering Manager
