Model of surface heat exchangers for
nuclear power applications
|
|
The Challenge
Aerofin, manufacturers of
extended surface heat exchangers for nuclear power applications, needed
to prove the structural integrity of its cooling coils to meet demanding
ASME-N-stamp standards in more detail than possible with manual analysis.
The Solution
Aerofin chose to use COSMOSM to model the cooling coil pipe and
applied three types of loads -- internal pressure (representing water
pressure), mechanical loads from existing piping; and a seismic load
to simulate earthquakes -- and ran stress analyses for each load case
and the combination of the effects of all three loads.
The analyses convinced the manufacturers
so completely about the structural integrity of the cooling coils that
they included the computer output of results in their ASME design report.
Summary and Metrics:
- Model consisted of 5,414 elements and approximately 4,500 degrees
of freedom
- Created a very refined mesh based on triangular shell elements on
first try
