Insulating bracket for power transformers

The Challenge
Murray, Inc. provides engineering services to customers who require
assistance with product development. The company specializes in the
design and analysis of plastic components and Assemblies, and uses software
that includes SolidWorks, COSMOSWorks, COSMOSM, C-Mold and Pro/ENGINEER.
The consultancy firm was asked
by General Electric to test whether a bracket used for a power pole
insulator had sufficient strength and adequate dielectric properties
to withstand high bending loads during installation.
The Solution
Prior to purchasing COSMOSWorks, Murray used an analysis program
that slowed down their product development efforts. Designer Andy Leopold
says, "We used another analysis program for several years. We had
difficulty developing project completion timeframes due to unforeseen
model development and analysis issues.
However, after seeing a demonstration
of COSMOSWorks, Murray designers were so impressed with the speed of
the COSMOS/FFE solvers and the ease of use of the software that they
purchased COSMOSWorks and COSMOSM Intermediate the next day. "We
were looking for dependability and speed, and we found that with COSMOSWorks,"
says Leopold
After analysis, Murray, Inc.,
showed that the new bracket would take twice the loads. The design met
General Electric's criteria and GE built the molds, made the parts and,
after subjecting them to actual loads, found that the physical results
matched Murray's predictions fairly closely. The entire project took
one person working for 29 hours, including model development and report
generation. Murray has been able to reduce its prices to its customers
by roughly one half, due to time savings since starting to use COSMOSWorks.
Summary and Metrics:
- 80% man-hour reduction during the critical phases of design development
- 30% reduction in engineering and design time
- Enabled taking on much more difficult analyses than before - such
as thermal expansion in non-linear cryogenic conditions and multiple
components with friction and complex interference conditions

"Upon
purchasing COSMOS, we were able to reduce our price by
roughly half, due to time savings."
