The model for the Automated Labware
Storage System contained over 300 parts (85 of them
unique) and 35 subassemblies. The 3-member design
team developed the model in less than 5 months and
finished the first prototype just 8 weeks later.

The Challenge
SAGIAN, a Beckman Coulter company, designs and builds advanced laboratory
robotics systems that in turn maximize productivity in drug discovery
research. In order to build cost-efficient, innovative products and
also quickly get these products to market, the design engineering team
needed both design and design-analysis tools that were intuitive to
both new and experienced users. SAGIAN also needed to efficiently update
3D models to test various designs throughout the development process.
The Solution
SAGIAN now achieves its objectives through SolidWorks and COSMOSWorks,
including assembly design, tight integration with Microsoft Windows,
and full associativity between model and details. SolidWorks enables
the team to validate assemblies prior to constructing prototypes, drastically
reducing design mistakes. SAGIAN also benefits from COSMOSWorks. Because
of COSMOSWorks, the company was able to replace a number of machined
aluminum parts with molded plastic to create a lighter weight, less
expensive product. Together, SolidWorks and COSMOSWorks have aided SAIGAN
to create robotic systems that are accurate throughout all stages of
the design cycle.
