Tensys's design concept involves using
an actuator to move a sensor over the patient's wrist.
The sensor has to float within a rigid frame attached
to a serpentine arm that is designed to flex.

The Challenge
Tensys® Medical, Inc. introduced
the T-Line Tensymeter, the first continuous, non-invasive arterial blood
pressure management system, in early 2003. The company was founded to
develop a non-invasive blood pressure monitoring system that provides
the continuous, real-time accuracy of direct, invasive arterial cannulation,
which is used in less than 12 percent of surgeries, and as a replacement
for traditional cuff-based NIBP monitors, which measure blood pressure
intermittently every few minutes. Non-invasive continuous monitoring
enables surgeons and physicians to respond quickly to significant and
rapid changes in blood pressure during surgery.
Fast, effective product development
was essential to the company's successful pursuit of this emerging $1
billion market. To come to the marketplace with an approved product
first, Tensys needed to shorten its design cycle and avoid protracted
prototyping.
The Solution
The company evaluated an assortment of analysis tools before selecting
COSMOSWorks analysis software. Tensys Medical chose COSMOSWorks
software because of its integration inside the SolidWorks® mechanical
design system, which the company also utilizes, broad range of capabilities,
and affordability. COSMOSWorks played a significant role in helping
Tensys Medical bring the T-Line Tensymeter to market. "We needed
the analysis results to pursue what ultimately became our final design,
which had the effect of not only reducing our material costs but also
shortening our manufacturing time and accelerating time-to-market,"
explains Senior Engineer, Russ Hempstead. "If we would have had
to go back and forth through the use of prototypes, the process would
have taken two to three times longer."
Summary and Metrics:
- Shortened design cycle by 60 percent.
- Reduced material costs and manufacturing time.
- Optimized design for flexibility and reliability.
- Innovated first product in new market space.

"Our
product is on the market and has been received very well by
the anesthesiologists and operating room personnel in large
part because of the COSMOSWorks analysis results. We have found
COSMOSWorks to be an invaluable tool for developing our products."
