Model of an 18-m trimaran with a 20-m mast

The Challenge

For the past 20 years, ComTec has been specializing in design, development and testing of highly complex structures made from fiber reinforced plastics in industries including aircraft, automotive, sports, marine and piping.

Recently, ComTec was requested to design a sailing yacht, also known as a trimaran, ensuring a maximum weight of a 6.5 metric tons (including all additional loads).

Because this yacht was intended for private use only, the project was very cost and labor intensive. Furthermore, prototyping was not possible. So ComTec needed an approach that would enable them to optimize the various structures of the yacht for the maximum weight quickly and precisely.

The Solution
In order to be able to solve the given task, various features of COSMOSM were used. ComTec optimized the hybrid skin laminates of the sandwich construction of the yacht. In doing so, multi-layer elements were assigned with the relevant orthotropic properties.

With COSMOSM's optimization method, ComTec was able to detect several weak points, which previously weren't taken into consideration. Eventually ComTec succeeded in meeting the requirement of a total weight of 6.5 metric tons including all additional loads, by using specific reinforcements.

Summary and Metrics:

  • Analyzed model with 55000 degrees of freedom
  • Utilizing COSMOSM's optimization features, ComTec was able to detect several weak points which previously had not been taken into account by sailing experts
  • Succeeded in meeting the requirement of a total weight of 6.5 metric tons including all additional loads
