Quizix's pumps required valves that can handle corrosive fluids at high pressures for millions of cycles.

The Challenge

Quizix, Inc., based in North Highlands, CA, is a leading manufacturer of precision fluid-handling equipment, such as high-performance pumps. First used in oil field research, Quizix's pump systems arer now employed in production environments around the world where precise flow rate or volume measurement is critical.

Quizix recently needed to develop an automated valve that could operate for 10 million cycles. They needed to design a valve that was remotely actuated, didn't change volumes, and could work as long as needed.

Quizix engineers determined that the best design for the job was an annulus structure: one cylinder nested inside another. Quizix's challenge was to optimize the size and shape of the annulus to get the largest CV possible. The CV is defined as the number of gallons per minute of water that will flow through a structure with one PSI (pound per square inch) drop across it. Any pressure loss at either end of the valve would ultimately lower the CV.

The Solution

With the easy integration between COSMOSFloWorks and their SolidWorks 3D CAD software, it seems almost natural that Quizix chose COSMOSFloWorks to add as their analysis package. "We were up and running analyses on our SolidWorks designs in no time," says John Petro, president of Quizix.

Using COSMOSFloWorks, the engineers were quickly able to analyze the design and determine that the function was similar to a decaying exponential curve.

"COSMOSFloWorks accurately predicted that the valve wasn't linear," said Petro, "With this finding in hand, we picked the best operating point on the curve - the point that minimized the pressure drop and maximized the CV for that annulus in record time."

Summary and Metrics:

  • Reduced analysis time from days to minutes.
  • Increased critical flow coefficients by 50% without adding to the cost.
  • Reduced physical prototypes.

"The software essentially paid for itself because we no longer have to spend time developing expensive prototypes and continually redesigning products. COSMOSFloWorks enables us to design and build products right the first time."

        John Petro, President.
