The Challenge
Design a streamlined speed skiing helmet that would help the United
States Speed Skiing Team increase their speed while maximizing
head protection -- in less than 30 days.
The Solution
To meet the deadline, the developers, coordinated by non-profit
US PEP, divided the project into four stages: modeling, analysis,
detailed design and manufacturing. Analysis with FlowPlus simulated
the effect of wind resistance on the new design over a period
of time. The analysis was completed in under six hours, leaving
plenty of time for detailed design and manufacturing.
The US team, wearing prototype helmets,
broke the old world record of 81 high speed runs in 24 hours in
the pre-Olympic trials.
Summary and Metrics:
- Analysis completed in less than six hours
- The US team, wearing prototype helmets, broke the old world
record of 81 high speed runs in 24 hours in the pre-Olympic
trials

"The
simulation was an integral step in the process as it allowed
us to observe the helmet's behavior without exposing the
athlete to a potentially hazardous situation."
