Bygging-Uddemann from Stockholm, Sweden, consistently improves its world-leading expertise in slipforming with a little help from COSMOSDesignSTAR.

The Challenge
Bygging-Uddemann AB of Stockholm, Sweden, world-leading experts in slipforming, designed the equipment used to build the CN Tower, the tallest free-standing structure in the world, piercing the clouds 553.34 metres above Toronto, Canada.

Bygging Uddeman put in a bid to win a harbour project in South Korea. The new harbour was to be built by enclosing part of the sea with enormous concrete caissons. Each caisson was to be 20m high, 30m long and up to 20m wide, the size of a small apartment block. They would weigh 5,600 metric tonnes and would need to be moved within the minimum of stress. The problem was how to move the structures from the building site on the shore into an ocean-going barge.

The Solution
"We had to come up with a design within three weeks. It was just before the summer vacation and it could have been a terrible time with a lot of pressure," recalled Lars Jonsson, the company's design engineer. Luckily, his company had already invested in COSMOSDesignSTAR to stay ahead of the competition. "We used the design and analysis software and came up with a solution. We got the job. If we had not had the software we would not have even bid for the job because we would not have been able to solve the problem in time. So we won the work which we wouldn't have otherwise."

Summary and Metrics:

  • Helped engineers to avoid designing structures that buckle.
  • Calculations that would have taken several days now take less than two hours.
  • The speed of the software saved time and saved the company money.
